Churches are a big part of Montreal’s architectural and historical heritage. They’re landmarks of the city. During a visit in Montreal in 1881, American novelist Mark Twain remarked that “This is the first time I was ever in a city where you couldn’t throw a brick without breaking a church window”. Despite its nickname of the city with a hundred steeples, Montreal is home to far more than 100 churches.
